Structure

Vector Space is a non-profit community makerspace. Our founders and staff are passionate about making, and teaching others to make. We believe the most rewarding things in life are hands-on experiences shared with others.

Mission

Vector Space is a makerspace and community workshop with the mission to build an open and collaborative community that fosters innovation, creativity, and the pursuit of science based knowledge.

Membership

We offer 24/7 access to users ages 18+. Enrollment is open 4x per year and begins with a tour, orientation, and safety training. Members enjoy 12,000 square feet of shared workspace and equipment, a community of fellow makers, and discounts on classes.

Engineering Mentoring

When I decided to study engineering, I knew that I liked science and I liked to build things, and that engineering probably included these things. I wasn't completely wrong, but certainly misguided, and it's an experience I've heard from many of my fellow engineers. If there isn't an engineer in your life, you likely have little understanding of what engineers do in general, and even less about specific subdomains. Part of the solution to this problem must surely be for engineers to engage with the public and serve as the source of this knowledge.

Makerspace Move + Expansion

2023 is shaping up to be a BIG year for Vector Space. With the support of our Board of Directors and community partners, our team has secured the perfect location for the makerspace of our future: 2004 Memorial Avenue. This high-visibility location includes infrastructure for both industrial shop space and clean workspace to accommodate diverse maker mediums. The new building will increase our footprint by 60%.

Math Marathon 2022 Wrap Up

The second annual Math Marathon has come to an end, and though the problems got harder, after 26.2 hours, we're proud to have collectively solved 43 problems this year, earning 5 more awards and reaching level 3 on projecteuler.net. The hardest problems of the event (144 and 169) were solved by Emily Griffen, Andrew Burks, and Jesse Hyatt. Two participants, Jesse Hyatt and Adam Spontarelli, completed the full 26.2 hours, though their productive output was logarithmic.

Maker Faire Lynchburg 2022

Maker Faire Lynchburg is thrilled to be back on the campus of Randolph College on April 3, 2022.

Join us for a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue for makers to show hobbies, experiments, projects, and products.

Mathathon 2021 Wrap-up

You might be surprised how much math can be found in a makerspace. Making a table with angled legs and you need to know how long to cut them? Math. Cutting pentagons for a DIY soccer ball of a known circumference and you need to know how long each side should be? Math. Fitting up gears of differing sizes that still mesh without too much contact pressure? That's right, math.
